Interrelated with the root ص ي د (ṣ-y-d), ultimately from Proto-Semitic *ṣVd- (to take food, to capture game, to fish; hunting and gathering), with early alphabetic symbols interpreted as depicting, a plant, a fishing hook or hunting barb, and in Arabian scripts possibly even a stick-figure human crouched in ambush.
