Borrowed from Arabic عَلَامَة (ʕalāma, sign, mark, symbol).

علامت (ʼalamet) (plural علامات (ʼalamat))

  1. sign, symbol, any object or event whose presence indicates the occurance of something else

  2. symptom, a perceived change in some function of a person that indicates a disease or disorder

  3. cipher, device, any emblem or other mark used to distinguish or identify the bearer from others
