Compare Biblical Hebrew סְנֶה (sənê). If related to Arabic سَنَا (sanā, “senna”), perhaps from Proto-Semitic *šinn- (“tooth”).

     ܟܠ ܐܝܠܢܐ ܓܝܪ ܡܢ ܦܐܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܗܘ ܡܬܝܕܥ. ܠܐ ܓܝܪ ܠܩܛܝܢ ܡܢ ܟܘܒ̈ܐ ܬܐܢ̈ܐ. ܐܦ ܠܐ ܡܢ ܣܢܝܐ ܩܛܦܝܢ ܥܢܒ̈ܐ.

     koll ʾīlānā ḡêr men pēʾraw[hy] [h]ū meṯīḏaʿ. lā ḡêr lāqṭīn men kubbē ṯêʾnē, ʾāp̄ lā men sanyā qāṭpīn ʿenəḇē.

     For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
