Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hánȷ́ʰas (anxiety, fear), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂énǵʰ-o-s, from *h₂enǵʰ- (constricted, tight; distress anxiety). Cognate with Avestan 𐬄𐬰𐬀𐬵 (ązah), Latin angor (anguish), Proto-Germanic *angazaz (worry). Also distantly related to English anxiety.
