Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Punjabi ਛੱਤ (chatta), ultimately from Sanskrit *छत्ति (chatti), from छद् (chad, “to cover”) + -ति (-ti). Eclipsed native Old Hindi छात (chāta), from the same source.
