From Old Khmer nāy, nāya (“leader; leading man”); ultimately from Sanskrit नाय (nāya, “guide; leader”). Cognate with Lao ນາຍ (nāi), Modern Khmer នាយ (niəy).

นาย • (naai)

chief; lord; master.

A man under 15 years of age is required to use the title เด็กชาย (dèk-chaai).
A woman under 15 years of age is required to use the title เด็กหญิง (dèk-yǐng), and that over 15 years of age is required to use the title นางสาว (naang-sǎao). A married woman, irrespective of the age, is required to use either นางสาว (naang-sǎao) or นาง (naang).

นาย • (naai)

(colloquial) a second person pronoun used to address a male friend.
