From Proto-Tai *liəŋꟲ (to raise), from Old Chinese (OC *laŋʔ, “to nourish”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩃ᩠ᨿ᩶ᨦ, Lao ລ້ຽງ (līang), ᦵᦟᧂᧉ (leng²), Shan လဵင်ႉ (lâ̰eng), Tai Nüa ᥘᥥᥒᥳ (lėng), Ahom 𑜎𑜢𑜂𑜫 (liṅ).
