Khmer[edit]

Etymology 1[edit]

Sanskritized form of វាត់ (vŏət), based upon वाट (vāṭa, enclosure). From Proto-Mon-Khmer *wa(a)t/*wi(i)t (to go round, bend, curve, turn). Cognate with Temiar wiit and Proto-Khasian *wa(a)t. Other roots connoting encircling that start with a labial approximant include វង់ (vŭəng), វាំង (vĕəng), and វិល (vɨl).

Compare Northern Khmer เวื็อด, Lao ວັດ (wat), Thai วัด (wát).
