Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Koine Greek προβατική (probatikḗ), thought to be an ellipsis of προβατικὴ [πύλη] (literally "Sheep [Gate]") used in the gospel of John, from προβατικός (probatikós, “of or relating to sheep”).
