Etymology[edit]

Compound of 目覚まし (mezamashi, waking, wakeup, the (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb 目覚(めざ)ます (mezamasu, to wake someone up).) +‎ 時計 (tokei, clock).[1][2] The tokei changes to dokei as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
