From 真 (ma-, “true”) + 名 (na, “name → character”). So called "true" because it is used for the meaning of the characters rather than their phonetic values, as opposed to 仮名 (kana, “provisional/borrowed characters”). Compare 真仮名 (magana, “phonetic kanji”).
Compare Korean 진서 (真書, jinseo, “true characters → Chinese characters”).
