Glyph origin[edit]
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *maːŋʔ, *moːʔ, *maːʔ) : phonetic 茻 (OC *maːŋʔ) + semantic 犬, and also ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : semantic 茻 + semantic 犬 (Li Xueqin, 2012).
Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-ljak ~ mrak ~ mruk.
