Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 글〮위 (Yale: kúlGwùy). Subsequently passed through the forms 그릐 (geurui) and 그늬 (geunui).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈkɯ(ː)ne̞]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
