Etymology

First attested in the Nammyeongjip eonhae (南明集諺解 / 남명집언해), 1482, as Middle Korean 온갓 (Yale: wonkas). From 온 (Yale: won, “all”) + 갓 (Yale: kas, “things”).

• Phonetic hangul: [온(ː)갇]
  • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
