Etymology[edit]
First attested in the Myobeomnyeonhwagyeong eonhae (妙法蓮華經諺解 / 묘법연화경언해), 1463, as Middle Korean 즛의 (Yale: cùsGùy). Also attested in the Myobeomnyeonhwagyeong eonhae (妙法蓮華經諺解 / 묘법연화경언해), 1463, as Middle Korean 즈ᇫ의 (Yale: cùzGùy). Also attested in the Gugeupbang eonhae (救急方諺解 / 구급방언해), 1466, as Middle Korean 즈ᅀᅴ (Yale: cùzùy).
This word is most likely equivalent to 찌끼 (jjikki) + —어기 (-eogi, “diminutive suffix”); compare 고무라기 (gomuragi, “rice cake crumbs”), 고내기 (gonaegi, “cat”), etc. The velar plosive in the second syllable points to an earlier form such as *즛긔 (*cuskuy), *즈스긔 (*cusukuy), or *즈스그리 (*cusukuli), but the origin is ultimately unclear.
