Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 혜아리다 (Yale: hyey.alita). From the same source as 세다 (seda, “to count”) with some unanalysable suffix, perhaps originally a dialectal variant. Compare 헤다 (heda, “(dialectal) to count”).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈhe̞(ː)a̠ɾida̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
