From Proto-Germanic *gumรด, from Proto-Indo-European *dสฐวตสฐmฬฅmล. Germanic cognates include Old Saxon gumo, Old High German gumo, Old Norse gumi (Norwegian gume), Old English guma. The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin homล, Proto-Baltic *ลพmo- (Old Lithuanian ลพmuo).
