German[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Latin supplementum, or French supplément.
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
Supplement n (strong, genitive Supplements, plural Supplemente)
- supplement (addition to a printed work)
- Das Lexikon besteht aus den Bänden A-G, H-Sch, Se-Z sowie einem Supplement.
- The encyclopaedia consists of the volumes A-G, H-Sch, Se-Z, and a supplement.
Usage notes[edit]
- The German word typically has a more restricted scope than the English. As in the example, it is used chiefly of a volume that it is added later to an already completed series of volumes. Accordingly, the compound Supplementband is quite common.
