[edit]Sino-Vietnamese word from 澳, contracted from 澳大利 (Úc Đại Lợi), from Mandarin 澳大利亞 / 澳大利亚 (Àodàlìyà, phonetically properly in Sino-Vietnamese Áo Đại Lợi Á). The reading úc (“riverbank”) is used perhaps to avoid confusion with Áo (“Austria”).
