Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Middle Low German danke, probably via Danish tanke, with the initial consonant of the related verb Icelandic þenkja (think), Danish tænke. Ultimately related to Old Saxon thenkian. The noun is attested in Icelandic sources since the 16th century.
