From Persian اسكندر(Eskandar), from Arabic إِسْكَنْدَر(ʾiskandar), from Ancient Greek Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros), from ἀλέξω (aléxō, I defend) + ἀνδρός (andrós), genitive of ἀνήρ (anḗr, man).
