Etymology[edit]

From Phoenician 𐤒𐤓𐤕𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤕(Qrt-ḥdšt, New City), hence doublet of Καρχηδών (Karkhēdṓn, Carthage). Probably also influenced by χαλκός (khalkós, bronze).
