Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *gʷelos. (The expected form is *δέλος, but the initial consonant has evidently been leveled with that of the cognate verb βάλλω ‎(bállō).) Cognates include Old High German quelan and Lithuanian gelti.
