From Proto-Indo-European *mréǵʰus ‎(short, brief). Cognates include Sanskrit मुहुर् ‎(múhur), मुहु ‎(múhu), Avestan 𐬩𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬎𐬸𐬘𐬍𐬙𐬌 ‎(mǝrǝzu.jīti, short-lived), Latin brevis and Old English miriġe (English merry).
