Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Could be from unattested *ζᾱτός (*zātós), from the same root of δίζημαι (dízēmai, to seek), from Proto-Indo-European *yeh₂-, whence ζῆλος (zêlos, zeal) and ζημία (zēmía, damage, loss).
