Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱemh₂- (exert oneself, get tired).[1] Cognate with Sanskrit शम् (śam, to toil, arrange), Hindi शांति (śānti, peace and quiet).
