From *μελίλιχια, from Proto-Indo-European *melit ‎(honey) (whence μέλι ‎(méli, honey)) + Proto-Indo-European *leiǵh- ‎(lick) (whence λείχω ‎(leíkhō, I lick)). Compare Sanskrit मधुलिह् ‎(madhulih).
