Etymology

[edit]

The word has been compared with Sanskrit पिङ्गल (piṅgala, reddish brown) and with πίγγαν (píngan, nestling, chick). The etymology remains unknown, however the presence of the prenasalization and the suffix -αλ- could lead to a Pre-Greek etymology.
