Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Hellenic *kʷoiwéō, as shown by Doric/Aeolic ποιϝέω (poiwéō), perhaps derived from a noun *ποιϝός (*poiwós) (seen in many compounds, -ποιός), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷoywós, from *kʷey- (pile, stow, to gather). Cognate might be Sanskrit चिनोति (cinoti) and Proto-Slavic *činiti.
