Inherited from Koine Greek *πρωτομηνία (*prōtomēnía) (compare Doric Greek πρατομηνία (pratomēnía)), modelled after Ancient Greek νουμηνία (noumēnía, new moon).[1] By surface analysis, πρωτο- (proto-) +‎ μήν(ας) (mín(as)) +‎ -ιά (-iá).
