From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyēw- ‎(to spit, vomit). Akin to Latin spuō, Old English spīwan (whence modern English spew), Old Armenian թուք ‎(tʿukʿ), Old Church Slavonic пльвати ‎(plĭvati), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति ‎(ṣṭhīvati).
