Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Could be from a Proto-Indo-European *pel-, *pl̥n-, with cognates including Sanskrit पणते (páṇate), Lithuanian pelnas and Old Norse falr. However, could also be related to ἐμπολή (empolḗ, trade, purchase) and/or πέλω (pélō, I move, am).
