From στέγω (stégō, I cover). From Proto-Indo-European *steg-, *teg-, a root with an s-mobile. Cognate to Lithuanian stíegiu (to thatch, to cover a roof), Latin tegō (I cover), Proto-Germanic *þakjaną (to cover).
