From Proto-Hellenic *skʰḗmə, from Proto-Indo-European *sǵʰ-éh₁-mn̥, formed from the zero grade of Proto-Indo-European *seǵʰ- (to hold), synchronically corresponding to ἔχω (ékhō, I have) +‎ -μα (-ma).
