Etymology 1[edit]
Learnedly, from Ancient Greek ὑπογραφείς (hupographeís), participle of passive past tense ὑπεγράφην (hupegráphēn) of ὑπoγράφω (hupográphō). Synchronically, past participle of υπογράφομαι (ypográfomai), passive voice of υπογράφω (ypográfo, “sign”).
