From φέρω (phérō, to bear, carry; to bring, fetch) +‎ -έω (-éō, frequentative verbal suffix); from Proto-Hellenic *pʰoréyō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰoréyeti. Cognate with Sanskrit भारयति (bhāráyati).
