From Alanic *äväg, from *abga, from Proto-Iranian *āpaka-, literally ‘water-like’, from *āp- (water); compare Persian آب (āb) ‘water’, آبگینه (ābgīna) ‘glass’. Related to Old Armenian ապակի (apaki) and Hungarian üveg.
