From Proto-Turkic *bAj-ra-m. At the Proto-Turkic level, is considered to have the same verbal root as in байраҡ (bayraq), бәйге (bäyge) (q.v.).

Cognate with Tatar бәйрәм (bäyräm), Kazakh мейрам (meyram), Kyrgyz майрам (mayram), Khakas пайрам (payram), Azerbaijani bayram / بایرام‎, Turkish bayram, etc.
