Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠪᠠᠯᠲᠠ (balta) from Middle Mongol ᠪᠠᠯᠲᠠ (balta) from Proto-Mongolic *balta, from Proto-Turkic *baltu. Cognate with Turkish balta. Cognate with Buryat балта (balta), Kalmyk балт (balt).
