Баҡа

Etymology[edit]

From Old Turkic baqa, from Proto-Turkic *b(i)āk(k)a(frog). Cognate with Kyrgyz, Tatar бака(baqa), Kazakh бақа(baqa), Yakut баҕа(bağa), Turkish kurbağa.

Note that the Proto-Turkic archetype seems to have had the generic meaning of "frogs and turtles / turtoises", hence the Bashkir compound ташбаҡа(tašbaqa, turtle, turtoise).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [bɑˈqɑ]
