Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *brъsnǫti (to sweep), secondarily influenced by obsolete бри́я (bríja, to shave).

The two meanings are still treated as distinct lemmas in Gerov's dictionary: respectively under бръ́снѫ (brǎ́snǫ, to sweep) and брь́снѫ (brʹ́snǫ, to shave).
