[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *brъsnǫti (“to sweep”), secondarily influenced by obsolete бри́я (bríja, “to shave”).
The two meanings are still treated as distinct lemmas in Gerov's dictionary: respectively under бръ́снѫ (brǎ́snǫ, “to sweep”) and брь́снѫ (brʹ́snǫ, “to shave”).
