From Proto-Slavic *vьrati, 1sg. *vьrǫ (as a verb, only preserved in Russian). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *werh₁- (to speak). Cognate with Lithuanian var̃das (name), Latin verbum (word), English word, Ancient Greek εἴρω (eírō, to speak), ῥήτωρ (rhḗtōr, orator) (compare English rhetoric, borrowed from Greek), Hittite [script needed] (weriya-, to call, to name).
