From Proto-Slavic *vesna, from Proto-Indo-European *wésr̥ ‎(spring). Cognate with Lithuanian vasara, Sanskrit वसर् ‎(vasar, morning) and वसन्त ‎(vasantá, spring), Persian بهار ‎(behar, spring), Ancient Greek ἔαρ ‎(éar), Latin ver, Old Armenian գարուն ‎(garun), Old Norse vár.
