Inherited from Proto-Slavic *žārā̀, perhaps together with жар (žar) for Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰēr- (heat, root noun),[1] from *gʷʰer- (heat, hot). Cognate with Hindi गर्म (garm) and Hindi गर्मी (garmī), Albanian zjarr, Old Armenian ջեր (ǰer), Latin fornāx, Old Norse varmr, Old Prussian goro (hearth; stove).
