Russian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unclear. No cognates in other Slavic languages. Possibly related to Ossetian къæбула (k’æbula, young dog). Trubachyov hypothesizes that the term originally referred to fur color, and explains it as *ко-бѣль, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *bělъ (white).
