Etymology

[edit]

First attested in c. 1380‒1400 as лендомъ (lendomŭ, gen. pl.). Borrowed from Finnic languages,[1] such as Veps verb stem lenda- of infinitive leta (to raise; to withstand (weight); to fly), cf. Estonian lendama, Võro lindama (to fly), ultimately from Proto-Finnic *lentädäk (to fly; to raise?), further origins unclear.[2]
