[edit]From Proto-Slavic *lotokъ, *lotъkъ, *lotoka, *lotъka, further etymology uncertain, in East Slavic only, Polish łotok being borrowed from there, as well as Lithuanian latãkas and Latvian lataka, lataga, possibly suffixed and ablauting (arbitrarily) to *laty, otherwise related to Proto-West Germanic *lattu, or Old Irish lathach (“mire, puddle”), Old Norse leðja (“mud”), Latin latex.
