Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Slovak matka, from Proto-Slavic *matъka. By surface analysis, мац (mac) +‎ -ка (-ka).

Sense of "mother" being displaced by мац (mac, mother) probably influenced by East Slavic; compare Russian мать (matʹ), Carpathian Rusyn and Ukrainian ма́ти (máty); as well as Czech, Polish, and Slovak matka (mother).

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Sense 2 also pertains to the "matica", a cultural organization with national or regional names in Slavic-language-speaking countries, especially in the Balkans. In Serbo-Croatian, this is usually expressed with матица / matica, however this may also be used in Pannonian Rusyn, especially regarding the Матица сербска (Matica serbska, Serbian matica). The Rusyn matica, however, is almost always referred to as the Руска матка (Ruska matka).
