From Proto-Slavic *mirъ ‎(peace; world), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mejHrós (cognates include Old Lithuanian mieras ‎(peace) and Latvian miêrs ‎(peace)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *mei- ‎(to tie); see also Ancient Greek μίτος ‎(mítos, warp thread), Old Persian 𐎷𐎰𐎼, and Sanskrit मित्र ‎(mitra).[1]
