[edit]Inherited from Old Ruthenian нѣтъ (nět), from Old East Slavic нѣту (nětu), from Proto-Slavic *nětu. Cognates include Pannonian Rusyn нєт (njet) and Russian нет (net).

[edit]- Unlike the Russian cognate, this particle is not used to negate possession; for instance, "I don't have" is expressed as я не маю (ja ne maju), rather than say *у мені нїт (*u meni njit).
